This two-volume book aims to provide an overview of control law design techniques for stabilization and disturbance attenuation for controlled dynamical systems. It is aimed at PhD or final-year master's students, as well as researchers in Automatic Control and Dynamical Systems.

The first volume, titled Differential Equations and Stability, is dedicated to the prerequisites for the second volume on dynamical systems and the asymptotic behavior of their solutions. After reviewing solutions of ordinary differential equations and their main properties, this volume defines the notion of stability of an equilibrium point and states necessary and/or sufficient conditions (including the Lyapunov and converse Lyapunov theorems) to characterize their nature. A study of the action of exogenous variables (disturbances, known inputs, etc.) is also presented, along with properties of stability robustness, Input-State Stability viewpoint and small-gain theorems, and dissipativity.

The second volume, titled Stabilization and Disturbance Attenuation, deals with control law design techniques for asymptotic stabilization and disturbance attenuation. After stating necessary conditions for the existence of stabilizing feedback, it presents various Lyapunov design techniques for state feedback: control Lyapunov functions, optimal control, backstepping, and forwarding. These techniques are extended to address the design of output feedback loops.

Laurent Praly

Graduated from École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris (Mines Paris -- PSL) and holds a PhD in Automatic Control and Mathematics from the University Paris IX Dauphine. He has spent his entire career at the Center for Automatic Control and Systems at Mines Paris.

His research focuses on finite-dimensional controlled dynamical systems with both theoretical and practical contributions to the synthesis of observers and closed-loop control in various aspects: linear and nonlinear, dynamic and output, constrained, with parametric or dynamic uncertainties, aiming at stabilization, disturbance attenuation or output regulation.

He has given numerous high-level courses related to his research themes in various national and international institutions.

Delphine Bresch-Pietri

Researcher in automatic control at the Center for Automatic Control and Systems at Mines Paris — PSL, she teaches in the Civil Engineering program. Her research themes focus on the control and estimation of dynamical systems, especially those of infinite dimension: systems with delay or boundary control of partial differential equations.
