Mathématiques Lacaniennes. Cantor, Gödel et Grothendieck à l’heure du féminisme
Book in French — English title: Lacanian Mathematics: Cantor, Gödel and Grothendieck in the Age of Feminism
The use of logical formalism allows Lacan to write the “formulas of sexuation”, which lead from classical logic, founded on Aristotle, to a new logical paradigm founded on a feminine “not-all”.
Grothendieck, for his part, characterises his own topological constructions as the “mathematical feminine”. He thereby broadens and updates Lacan’s references to the two great mathematicians with whom Lacan engages in his seminar, namely Cantor and Gödel. In particular, the feminine in mathematics is brought to the fore and, consequently, the question of the place of women in mathematics today.
The persistent disaffection of young women with mathematics, in favour of studies in psychology, no doubt rests in part on a lack of familiarity with Lacanian theory, which precisely weds mathematics and psychoanalysis. It follows from Lacanian thought that, if our societies are to evolve radically towards the eradication of violence and war, women will first have to reappropriate the foundations of our symbolic universe, namely mathematics.
Nathalie Charraud
After a doctorate in category theory, Nathalie Charraud taught mathematics at the University of Paris 13 for twenty years. At the same time she trained in psychoanalysis and wrote numerous articles linking psychoanalysis and mathematics, in the spirit of Lacan. With Pierre Cartier, she organised the 1999 Cerisy conference on “le réel en mathématiques” (the real in mathematics), which brought many mathematicians and psychoanalysts into dialogue. She is the author of an acclaimed biography of Cantor: Georg Cantor, Infini et Inconscient, Spartacus 2019.
Nathalie Charraud is an honorary member of the ECF (École de la Cause Freudienne) and of the WAP (World Association of Psychoanalysis). She is also an honorary senior lecturer (maîtresse de conférences) at the University of Paris 8 and the University of Rennes.
