Cosmology is a discipline in a state of ferment. New cosmological hypotheses emerge every year, while research continues on the major themes opened up over the past few decades: dark matter, dark energy, the limits of the standard cosmological model, the quest for the origins of material structures… Yet, as regards its foundations, cosmology remains a fragile discipline, raising very serious epistemological problems that are peculiar to it and give it a special place within contemporary physics. Is this ferment a sign that the discipline came of age during the twentieth century? Or is it, on the contrary, the sign of a discipline that is still relatively young and unsteady? In any case, it still has many surprises in store for us.
This collaborative volume brings together contributions from theoretical physicists, astronomers, philosophers and historians of science, and artists. From this interdisciplinary standpoint, four themes are addressed: the principles of cosmology, geometrical and diagrammatic approaches to the cosmos, the status of “dark objects”, and the cosmological imagination.

Julien Bernard
A lecturer in philosophy at Aix-Marseille Université, he works on the place of philosophical systems in reflection on contemporary science.
Simon Beyne
He holds a doctorate in epistemology and is the author of an interdisciplinary thesis on dark matter.
