La contemporanéité épistémologique de la phénoménologie transcendantale
Book in French — English title: The Epistemological Contemporaneity of Transcendental Phenomenology
What if transcendental phenomenology, far from belonging to the past, still possessed the resources to question the sciences at their highest level of technical sophistication?
The term “epistemological contemporaneity” designates the spectral relationship that binds Husserlian phenomenology to the great figures of science and epistemology. Through a stroll along a gallery of portraits — Weyl, Riemann, Rota, Hausdorff, Cavaillès, Desanti, Granger, Vuillemin, Bachelard, Châtelet, Thom, de Broglie — a renewed phenomenological epistemology takes shape, one required to think through the dynamics of scientific rationality, to shed light on its internal conflicts and to sketch a grammar of its forms and styles.
Rooted in the study of constituting experience and of the intentional syntaxes of subjectivity, it unfolds as an analytics of modulations, regimes of evidence and thresholds of formalisation. No longer obsessed with the “posited” or the “result”, whether theoretical or empirical, analytic or synthetic, it sets out above all to describe the concrete “ways” of doing science that make up the ABC of one of the dominant forms of the consciousness of rationality.
Carlos Lobo
Carlos Lobo is a philosopher specialising in phenomenology, the philosophy of science and logic. A former student of the École normale supérieure de Saint-Cloud and an agrégé in philosophy, he holds a doctorate and the habilitation to supervise research. A professor (chaire supérieure) in the classes préparatoires, he has several decades of research and teaching behind him, in France and abroad. He is an associate member of the Centre Gilles-Gaston Granger (Aix-Marseille University) and of the Husserl Archives in Paris (École normale supérieure), and a member of the Institut Fédératif de Recherches en Épistémologie (University of Nice).
His work explores the links between phenomenology and the sciences — from mathematics and physics to theoretical biology and cosmology. It addresses the logical and modal foundations of scientific rationality, the phenomenology of the formal and natural sciences, and the history of the interactions between philosophy and the sciences. It analyses the way subjectivity shapes the constitution of knowledge, bringing to light the processes through which scientific disciplines take shape. He has published in French and international journals and books, notably with Springer, Birkhäuser and Routledge.
