La guerre hors-champ
Book in French — English title: War Out of Frame
Focusing on the first phase of the Italian Wars, this book examines the images produced in the Peninsula between the outbreak of the conflict in 1494 and the Battle of Pavia (24 February 1525). Its aim is to analyse how an event that generates a state of crisis acts upon the relationship between historical fact and image, in order to bring out the criteria on which the preservation of memory is founded.
Insofar as the aesthetic gesture is a matter of putting the world in order, one may doubt its compatibility with a universe in which the very structure of reality had become unstable ever since Charles VIII entered Italy. One thus observes a temporary disconnection between the images produced in the Peninsula and politics, considered in terms of its most distinctive feature at that juncture: its military developments. This figurative void contrasts with the abundant military imagery produced in the other states involved in the affairs of the Peninsula, and qualifies the idea that contemporaries had an acute perception of military violence.
