From Darwin to today’s awareness of the Anthropocene, the movement of ideas has increasingly converged on placing humankind back within nature. Our understanding of human health as dependent on the environment and on food confirms this observation. The belief that humankind stands outside nature has become untenable.
Yet contemporary biology, in its genomic research and its economic applications, seems to ignore this truth. Still governed by the conquering principles of the 19th century, it aspires to nothing less than replacing nature with a nature that would suit us better.
Here Nicolas Bouleau sets out several fundamental scientific arguments that reveal the naivety and the dangers of this ideology. After recalling the main theses of his treatise Ce que Nature sait (PUF 2021), he examines in depth key questions debated in recent controversies over synthetic biology and genetically modified organisms.
A mathematician working in stochastic analysis, Nicolas Bouleau headed the mathematics centre of the École des Ponts ParisTech for ten years.
He is known for having developed a theory of error propagation in complex models. As an essayist, he has written on modelling, art, risk, psychoanalysis and financial economics.
He has taught epistemology and the philosophy of science at Université Paris-Est and at Sciences Po. He is a recipient of the Montyon Prize of the Académie des sciences.
