Introduction à la philosophie des sciences
Book in French — English title: Introduction to the Philosophy of Science
Philosophy is above all a means of educating, of leading outwards. Discovering the concerns of past thinkers, and the paths they took to shed light on the workings of the world, tears us away from the comfortable frameworks we have inherited from the well-meaning people around us.
The teaching gathered in this book was addressed to doctoral students from every discipline, from physics to sociology, from mathematics to environmental studies, coming from several countries and continents.
The ambition of this course is to be an invitation. This is culturally more important than it may seem. The internet has produced an invisible army of righters of inaccuracies, yet statements of the form “there is” pile up and congeal into a pseudo-understanding, for want of interpretation.
Nicolas Bouleau is a mathematician working in the field of stochastic analysis. For ten years he headed the mathematics centre of the École des Ponts ParisTech.
He is known for having developed a theory of error propagation in complex models. As an essayist, he has written on modelling, art, risk, psychoanalysis and financial economics.
He has taught epistemology and the philosophy of science at Université Paris-Est and at Sciences Po. He is a recipient of the Prix Montyon of the Académie des sciences.
