Unlike physical dynamics, where the space of possibility is fixed a priori, and structural dynamics, where it becomes a space of control, in heterogenesis the space of possibility is created immanently.
Heterogenesis could be defined as the set of dynamics of an ecology of immanence, in that one leaves behind the automatism of physics and structural control once one gains access to the axis of the historicity of dynamics. Liberation from automatism lies precisely in the capacity to compose differential elements and forces along this axis. It is the axis of phylogenesis in the evolution of species, of the invention of concepts in imaginative processes, of the composition of multitudes in social dynamics. What emerges is a whole political epistemology, one that seeks to transmute contemporary forms of abstract thought and to integrate them into the toolbox of critical thought itself.
Alessandro Sarti
A mathematician and epistemologist, and CNRS research director at the EHESS in Paris, he is interested in processes of heterogenesis capable of producing imaginative, indeterminate and mutational dynamics. He leads the Dynamiques post-structurelles seminar at the EHESS and the Neuromathématiques seminar at the Collège de France. He is a founding member of Cardano, a group of heterodox mathematicians, and editor of the Springer Nature book series Lecture Notes in Morphogenesis.
Giovanna Citti
A mathematician, she is a professor at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna and is seconded to the Beniamino Segre Centre of the Academy of Sciences in Rome. She works on partial differential equations in highly singular settings, capable of modelling problems in cognitive neuroscience: brain dynamics and imaginative dynamics. She leads the Neuromathématiques seminar at the Collège de France and the Neuromathematics of Vision group in Bologna.
