Rigueur
Book in French — English title: Rigour
This volume sets out to question and compare ideas of rigour in three disciplines that each have a language of their own — mathematics, music and philosophy — in order, among other things, to create an axis through which their legendary interpenetration may be better perceived.
At a time when public discourse is dangerously lacking in intellectual rigour, in favour of ever more images and figures, it seemed worthwhile to invite philosophers, musicians and mathematicians keen to bear witness to whatever, in their own disciplinary approach as researchers, calls upon something akin to a rigorous method.
While the notion of rigour seems intrinsic to mathematics, readers will find many surprises as they encounter aesthetic and intuitive forms of rigour in mathematics, and a subtle interplay between rigour and meaning. Likewise, they will discover the importance of a rigorous dynamic necessary to musical creation, which may strike them as cutting across the idea of the sensible, as well as the force of a rigour, ever central and liberating, in philosophical discourse.
This volume contains the proceedings of the Rigueur conference, organised by the Centre de Mathématiques Laurent Schwartz (École polytechnique and CNRS) at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Amphithéâtre Furet) on 2 and 3 July 2019.
