Nicolas Bouleau, emeritus researcher, former senior researcher and professor at the École des Ponts ParisTech, former director of CERMICS (and also an associate researcher at CIRED), has brought together in this book dialogues he conducted with mathematicians (Laurent Schwartz, Gustave Choquet, Paul Malliavin, Paul-André Meyer, David Nualart, Nicole El Karoui, Richard Gundy, Masatoshi Fukushima, Denis Feyel, Gabriel Mokobodzki) with whom he had the opportunity to work during his research career.
His wide-ranging experience – as a mathematician, of course, but also as an essayist and epistemologist – and his taste for the arts lend a particularly human and delightful flavour to these dialogues, which are moreover of undeniable importance in their own right for anyone curious about the motivations of mathematicians (or at least, here, of some of them), a group that is usually rather discreet.

Nicolas Bouleau is a mathematician specialising in stochastic analysis. For ten years he headed the mathematics centre of the École des Ponts ParisTech.
He is known for having developed a theory of error propagation in complex models. As an essayist, he has written on modelling, art, risk, psychoanalysis and financial economics.
He has taught epistemology and the philosophy of science at the Université Paris-Est and at Sciences Po. He is a recipient of the Montyon Prize of the Académie des sciences.
