Généalogie des Mathématiques
Book in French — English title: A Genealogy of Mathematics
This book examines the development of Western mathematics since the inception of the rationalist project by Pythagoras, whose dream of founding ontology on arithmetical principles came up against the crisis of irrational magnitudes. It was to overcome this crisis that Euclid unified mathematics under the primacy no longer of arithmetic but of geometry, axiomatising it on the basis of Aristotle’s theory of demonstration.
We locate the advent of modernity, in the 16th century, in the gradual and systematic calling into question — made possible in particular by the invention of algebra — of this Aristotelian-Euclidean foundation of mathematics, in geometry and arithmetic, but also in axiomatics and logic. This led mathematicians to theorise a variability not only of objects, but also of models, axiomatic systems, languages and even logics.
We show how, far from amounting to a failure, the abandonment of the project of a total and absolute unification and foundation of mathematics results in a major expansion of its rationality.
