In this first-year computer science course, Denis Monasse shares the wealth of his past experience, the fruit of many years of teaching in the classes préparatoires at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris, where, ever since computer science was introduced as an option in the preparatory classes, he has guided countless students on the path to success.
Particular emphasis is placed on rigour and on the explanation of computing concepts, both theoretical and practical, with more than 250 programs and 40 illustrations as examples. The book is, moreover, accessible to complete beginners in the field: in addition to the many explanations for learners throughout the text, an entire chapter is devoted to an introduction to programming.
Finally, the originality of this book lies in presenting two different programming languages side by side throughout the course: Caml, used for the computer science option in MPSI, and Java, an object-oriented programming language that will interest not only some L1 students but also (future) engineers wishing to learn this widely used language in a rigorous way.
Denis Monasse
A former student of the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, Denis Monasse has for many years taught mathematics in the MP* preparatory class at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand.
In addition to his extensive teaching experience, he has served on a variety of competitive examination boards, from the CAPES to the agrégation in mathematics, as well as for the oral examinations of the École Centrale Paris.
Equally involved in the teaching of computer science in the preparatory classes, he has also written two textbooks for the first and second years (L1 and L2), available in the same series.
