Book in French — English title: Is There Truth in Art?

How can art still progress beyond the avant-gardes? Louis Anquetin knows the answer: by going backwards! Around 1920, the former close friend of Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh resolved to turn his back on the soul-searching of the moderns and to draw from the past the lessons of artistic renewal: in a hundred or so dense pages, written in a single sweep, he composed a treatise on art that lays as much emphasis on theory as on practice.

Today’s readers will undoubtedly profit from consulting this manual, which is above all a declaration of love for the “great masters”.

Louis Anquetin (Étrépagny 1861 – Paris, 1932)

He enjoyed early success as an avant-garde painter in late 19th-century Paris. Weary of the superficiality of modern art, he soon resolved to recapture the spirit of the old masters by making their technique his own. To the end of his life Anquetin considered himself misunderstood; he nevertheless trained a handful of pupils who would keep alive a legacy that remains relevant today.
