Lire et comprendre les inscriptions étrusques
Book in French — English title: Reading and Understanding Etruscan Inscriptions
French translation, 2015.
Original title: Iscrizioni etrusche - leggerle e capirle, 2007.
The aim of this book is to offer a clear and intelligible account of the state of research on Etruscan epigraphy. It is intended above all for the non-specialist reader with a personal interest in and curiosity about the subject, but also for the scholar approaching the field for the first time, who will undoubtedly find its extensive select bibliography useful.
The path the reader is invited to follow is the reverse of that taken by handbooks with a more specifically linguistic orientation. It places the concrete and the particular (the inscriptions themselves) at the centre, and works its way gradually towards the general.
The text thus owes its clarity and effectiveness to the opportunity it gives the reader to follow, step by step, the process of interpreting an unknown language, drawing from it not only knowledge but also a methodology.
An archaeologist of international renown, Enrico Benelli has devoted his entire academic career to the Etruscan world. Since 2001 he has been a researcher at the CNR, where he works on the preparation of the principal editions of Etruscan inscriptions, the Corpus Inscriptionum Etruscarum and the Thesaurus Linguae Etruscae. He was responsible for creating the first museum of Etruscan epigraphy, in Chiusi, whose success with the public shows no sign of waning.
This volume is the fruit of twenty years of study and research devoted to Etruscan epigraphy.
