Œuvres complètes — Théâtre I
Book in French — English title: Complete Works — Theatre I
To mark the centenary of Marie Lenéru’s death, we present the first volume of her complete works, bringing together three plays staged at the Théâtre de l’Odéon and the Comédie-Française: Les Affranchis, La Triomphatrice and La Paix.
These plays belong to the tradition of the theatre of ideas, which seeks to bring social issues to the stage, with characters pitting their views — never trivial ones — against one another. With a talent recognised by figures such as Catulle Mendès and Léon Blum, Marie Lenéru reflects on divorce, career and love, and the role of women during the war, offering, in a powerful style, a varied panorama of early twentieth-century opinion on these questions.
This rediscovery of Marie Lenéru’s work forms part of the VisiAutrices research project on the visibility of women writers in secondary and higher education, supported by the CNRS and the Réseau national des maisons des sciences de l’homme, in partnership with the association Le deuxième texte.
Born in Brest, Marie Lenéru began keeping a diary (published after her death) at the age of eleven. A year later, following an attack of measles, she became deaf and her eyesight deteriorated severely. Despite these difficulties, she was an avid reader and resolved to devote herself to a life of the mind.
After writing a novel, a text on Saint-Just and then one on Helen Keller, she wrote plays that were staged at the Théâtre de l’Odéon and the Comédie-Française. She died of Spanish flu in Lorient on 23 September 1918, shortly before the end of the war.
The non-profit project Le deuxième texte provides resources for literature teachers to give greater visibility to texts written by women.
